Octavo. Original quarter black cloth over textured tan paper-covered boards, the author's initials stamped in silver to the upper board, the spine lettered in silver. With the original pictorial dust jacket, design by R. Adelson and illustration by Steven Stroud, unclipped and priced $13.95 to the front flap, with the issue code 0981 to the foot of the flap.

Published by Viking on 8 September 1981 and awarded the British Fantasy Society's August Derleth Award for Best Novel the following year, with further shortlistings for the Locus and Balrog awards. The novel returns to Castle Rock, the Maine town King had introduced in The Dead Zone. Lewis Teague's film adaptation followed in 1983, departing from the novel in allowing the child to survive. In On Writing King recorded that Cujo is the one novel he barely remembers writing, a consequence of the alcoholism of the years in which it was written.
