Flashman - First Edition by George MacDonald Fraser

Flashman

By George MacDonald Fraser

First edition, first impression: London: Herbert Jenkins Ltd., 1969.

Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the original pictorial dust jacket by Barbosa, priced 25s net to the front flap.

A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, with bright cloth and sharp corners; light spotting to the edges, chiefly to the top edge, the contents otherwise clean and well-preserved.

The dust jacket fine and bright, with only the faintest suggestion of fading to the spine panel; unclipped and presenting beautifully.

The first appearance of Fraser's celebrated Flashman Papers, introducing the irrepressible anti-hero Harry Flashman, whose purported memoirs recast Victorian imperial history with irreverent wit and meticulous historical detail. The novel proved an immediate success and gave rise to a long-running and much admired series. It was adapted for the screen as Royal Flash (1975), directed by Richard Lester and starring Malcolm McDowell, though this drew on the second Flashman novel rather than the present work.
