Life, the Universe and Everything - Signed First Edition by Douglas Adams

Life, the Universe and Everything

By Douglas Adams

First paperback edition, first impression: Pan Books, 1982. Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page: "Best wishes, Douglas Adams 27-xi-84."

Duodecimo. Original pictorial wrappers, the cover illustration by David Scutt, priced £1.50 on the rear cover.

Very good or better, with some of the usual toning to the edges and a few faint spots to the fore-edges of the opening couple of leaves and to the lower portion of the rear cover.

The third of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy books, and, like the two before it, issued by Pan as a paperback: this edition precedes the Arthur Barker hardback published later the same year. The novel had an unusual origin. Adams first proposed the story to the BBC as Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen, a six-part serial for Tom Baker's Doctor Who; it was rejected, was afterwards considered for a second series of the Hitch-Hiker's television adaptation that was never commissioned, and its elements were finally reworked into the present title.
