Original black cloth, the spine lettered in gilt. With the original pictorial dust jacket, the illustration by Josh Kirby, unclipped and priced £10.95 net to the front flap, the rear flap carrying the "Recent Gollancz SF" list.

Near fine: a few spots to the text-block edges, primarily to the top; the binding square and firm, the contents clean and unmarked.

The dust jacket near fine, with one minuscule chip to a corner, the spine panel notably bright and unfaded.

The fourth Discworld novel and the first built around Death, published on 12 November 1987 in a first impression of 3,950 copies. It took the Dracula Society's Children of the Night Award for 1987, and was voted into the top hundred in the BBC's Big Read in 2003, the highest-placed of the Discworld novels. Pratchett resigned his post as press officer with the Central Electricity Generating Board that year, shortly after finishing the manuscript, to write full time.
