The Silence of the Lambs

By Thomas Harris

First UK edition, first impression, published by William Heinemann in 1989.

Octavo, publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in silver with the publisher's device to the foot; dust jacket designed by Claudia Zeff, illustration by Simon Larbalestier, unclipped and priced £10.95 net to the front flap.

Some toning to the edges, else near fine.

The dust jacket is very good: some sunning to the spine, with moderate edge wear, primarily to the head; the top corners a little abraded.

Harris's third novel, and the first to place FBI trainee Clarice Starling in direct confrontation with Dr Hannibal Lecter, who had appeared as a secondary character in Red Dragon (1981). The 1991 film adaptation, directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, won the "Big Five" at the 64th Academy Awards - Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Adapted Screenplay - only the third film in Academy history to do so, and it remains the sole horror film to have won Best Picture.
