Hand-coloured etched frontispiece and a further three plates by John Leech with four wood-engravings by W.J. Linton. Two pp advertisements at rear. Gilt edges with publisher's original cinnamon vertically ribbed cloth stamped in blind and gilt. Previous owner name to half-title dated 1844. Small stain on page 25 and one plate detached. A little light soling to leaves here and there with some rubbing to edges. Hinges starting and binding a little exposed towards the rear of the book, but all pages, save for the one aforementioned plate, still firmly in place. A very good example.£2,500.00 -

A. Motteux. Near contemporary red half morocco over marbled boards with marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. Engraved frontispieces with numerous engraved plates and tissue-guards. Toning to edges with spotting to preliminaries and rear endpapers. Occasional browning. Rubbing to spine ends, hinges and all extremities. Vol 1 lacking frontispiece tissue-guard, but all others are present.£675.00 -

Antiquarian, Children's Fiction, First EditionThe Water-Babies By Charles Kingsley First edition, first issue (Macmillan & Co, 1863) with l'envoi leaf present, of which there were only believed to be around 200 copies. Housed in an attractive morocco drop-back box with raised bands, blue compartments, gilt lettering and marbled boards. Original green cloth. Spine re-backed using most of the original, only lacking the tips and a small square hole just below the centre. Occasional light foxing and a little rubbing to covers. Hinges neatly reinforced. Free from names and inscriptions. A very good example of a very rare book.£500.00
